Rules for different address types

Accurate shipping addresses are essential for successful order fulfillment. Address validation rules help merchants prevent delivery failures, reduce returns, and ensure that shipments only go to supported destinations.

Valider allows you to enable rules that automatically detect and flag unsupported or invalid address types during checkout. When an address does not meet your requirements, customers are prompted to correct it before the order proceeds.

What Are Address Validation Rules?

Address validation rules define which types of addresses your store can or cannot accept. These rules analyze the customer’s shipping address and identify issues such as missing information, unsupported address formats, or restricted destinations.

You can enable any combination of rules based on your shipping policies and carrier limitations.

Available Address Types and Rules

Below is a list of address types you can detect and restrict using Valider:

Address Completeness Rules

• Missing Street Number
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses without a street number.

• Missing Street Name
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses without a street name.

• Missing Province/State
  Enable this rule if a province or state is required to proceed with checkout.

• City Name Minimum Length
  Enable this rule if you require city names to meet a minimum character length.

Address Format & Content Rules

• Emojis
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses containing emojis.

• Non-Latin Characters
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses using non-Latin characters.

• Address Minimum Length
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses that are too short.

• Extra Long Address
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses that are excessively long.

• Address Contains Invalid Text
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to addresses containing invalid text such as “test” or placeholder content.

Postal Code Rules

• Non-Numeric Postal Codes
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to postal codes that include letters or symbols.

• Restricted ZIP/Postal Codes
  Enable this rule if you want to block or restrict specific ZIP or postal codes.

Address Type Restrictions

• Post Office (PO) Boxes
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to PO Box addresses.

• Private Mailboxes
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to private mailbox addresses.

• USPS GoPost
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to USPS GoPost addresses.

• Military Addresses
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to military (APO/FPO/DPO) addresses.

Location-Based Rules

• Rural Addresses in New Zealand
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to rural New Zealand addresses.

• Specific US States
  Enable this rule if you cannot ship to selected U.S. states.

• Exclude Countries from Validation
  Enable this rule if you want to skip address validation for selected countries.

Delivery Type Rules

• Business (Commercial) Addresses
  Enable this rule if you do not deliver to business or commercial addresses.

• Residential Addresses
  Enable this rule if you do not deliver to residential addresses.

How Does It Work for Merchants?

When a customer enters a shipping address that violates one or more enabled rules, Valider validates the address before the order is completed.

Here’s how the process works:

1. The customer enters a shipping address during checkout.

2. If the address violates any enabled validation rules, an error message is displayed immediately.

3. The customer is prompted to correct the address before completing payment.

4. Once a valid address is entered, the customer can proceed with checkout and complete the order.

5. The order is created in Shopify with a compliant and validated shipping address.

Merchants receive only valid addresses, eliminating the need for manual review or post-checkout corrections.
